By installing UPVC French doors or UPVC patio doors you can actually save money in the long run. This is because UPVC doors benefit from being built using double glazing which is highly energy efficient. Therefore you will not need to produce as much heat in order to keep your home warm meaning you will use less gas and electricity hence lowering your energy bills.

If you have always considered installing French doors or patio doors but have been put off by the security issues in the past then it might be worth reconsidering. UPVC doors have many benefits and could help to make a big difference to your home.

How to Measure Your Windows For Window Blinds

A savvy shopper looking to find the best price on window blinds would be wise to do a little research. Stores like Walmart and Target will usually have competitive prices, but a limited selection of blinds from which to choose. The biggest advantage of walking into a discount store to buy your blinds off the shelf is that there is no waiting to get them. Just pay for them, take them home and put them up.

For those who are not limited by an immediate need to have something covering their windows, there are some rewards to shopping online. There are many internet retailers who have a wide selection of window treatments available that can be purchased "as is", "cut to order" or custom made. You can also price shop while at home in your skivvies enjoying a glass of wine or a beer. That's much better than driving around town to Target, Walmart, Home Depot or Lowes, plus you'll probably be able to save money as well as gas. Internet shopping is "green" shopping.

LOWES FRENCH DOORS

If you're going to order blinds online, knowing how to measure your windows or doors is important. Carpenter's have a saying "measure twice, cut once". In this situation you could say "Measure twice, pay once". If you order custom blinds and don't order the right size, you can't send them back, so if you want to reorder you'll be charged again.

If you're measuring for vertical blinds, here are a few tips so that you get the measurements right:

When you're writing down the measurements make sure to clearly note which number is the width and which is the height and always indicate the widthbefore the height (W x H). Plastic or cloth measuring tapes that are typically used by seamstresses for measuring cloth, or in my case, thighs, have a tendency to stretch, so use a steel measuring tape and measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. Measure the width in at least two places and take the smallest width. Depending on the width of the window, measure the height in at least two places and take the smallest height. If you're measuring for a sliding glass door, they usually only use a one-way draw. The tracks for one-way draws are usually reversible. Inside mount valances will not align flush with the wall. They will extend into the room an inch or two.

Should you choose and inside or an outside mount?

Make your decision on whether you will have an inside mount or an outside mount before measuring for the blinds. An outside mount can help conceal an old, unsightly window. An outside mount can make your windows appear larger. An inside mount provides a neater look. If you prefer an inside mount, make sure the window has enough depth to install the mounting hardware. For an inside mount, be sure to allow for the height of the blinds headrail in your measurements.

How to measure for an inside mount - Measure the width at the top, center and bottom of the window opening and record the narrowest width. Measure the height left, center and right and record the shortest height. Provide exact measurement when ordering your blinds because they will deduct 1/16 to 3/8 of an inch from the width and up to 1/2 inch from the height to make sure the blinds fit inside the window frame. Also, make sure the window has enough depth for the mounting brackets.

How to measure for an outside mount - Measure the width of the window opening and if there is room, add at least 4 inches to each side to try to minimize any leaks of outside light. Next, measure the height of the window opening and add at least 2 ½ inches to the height so that you can mount the brackets above the opening and allow for some overlap at the bottom of the window. If the blinds will hang down to the floor, make sure that you have about ½ inch clearance so that they open and close properly. When you specify an outside mount, no deductions will be taken and the blinds will be cut to the exact measurements you provide.

Now that you know the advantages to buying vertical blinds online (better selection, lower price and less hassle) and how to get the proper measurements, you can pour yourself a beer or a glass of wine, sit down at your computer and start surfing for the best blinds at the best prices. Oh! One additional bit of advice is to measure first and drink later.

Create a Unique Look With Landscape Lights

One of the biggest ways to make your landscaping stand out is to make good use of lighting.  When property owners think about landscaping, thoughts of gardens or tress are likely the first that come to mind. The lighting that is employed, however, is an integral part of creating a unique look in landscaping.

Highlight Outdoor Landscaping With Lighting Fixtures

LOWES FRENCH DOORS

In addition to being used to draw attention to specific locations after the sun sets, lighting fixtures can also serve as accents when they are not lit. Among the ways that they can be displayed to highlight outdoor landscaping are:

Path or entryway lighting By mounting them on walls above flower beds By placing them on posts in gardens or near bodies of water By hanging lanterns from permanent structures
Try Copper Gas Lanterns for Unique Landscape Lights

There are many low voltage lighting options for outdoor landscaping - but one of the best ways to create a truly unique look is by using copper gas lanterns in your yard.  Many homeowners opt for the elegance of copper gas lanterns as they offer an antique look with a warm natural tone.

Why Choose Gas Lanterns for a Unique Outdoor Look:

Copper gas lanterns are particularly well suited for landscape lighting, as copper ages very well in the outdoors. The variety of styles and power / fuel options allow lanterns to be placed wherever they are needed. With outdoor landscape lighting, homeowners and businesses can draw attention to attractive features of their properties and create interesting public and private spaces. Natural lighting accents natural outdoor elements.  Rather than using electric lighting, homeowners can choose gas lanterns with natural flames that can reflect off of surfaces like glass patio doors, ponds and pools. The size of the flame can be controlled with ease, so that it does not overshadow the landscaping the lighting is meant to accent. Choose from traditional antique styles or more contemporary or modern styles of lanterns
Great ideas for where to place lanterns outdoors for a unique look:

Only your imagination will limit where you can place a gas or electric lantern in order to achieve that unique look you are after.  Among the most striking we install include:

The entryway to the home - front and rear entrances are natural locations for gas lanterns and can create a warm and inviting look with soft light. Path lighting - few things are more stunning than a series of lanterns lining a walkway from the driveway to the house is also a popular option. While there are many low voltage lighting option at mega stores, the antique look of handmade lanterns is hard to beat. Near ponds - These not only offer enough lighting that attractive outdoor landscaping can be seen in the evening hours, but the fixtures themselves can also serve as accents during the daytime. Post mounted in gardens - lanterns can be mounted on a wooden post or on a natural type of column such as brick or stone.  Natural stones and aged copper add great interest to a garden or patio environment.
Flexibility to Create Truly Unique Patio Lighting

Homeowners looking for patio lighting that can stand up to relatively severe environmental conditions should consider copper gas lanterns before opting for more standard low voltage lighting. Available in a number of styles, gas lanterns have been used for centuries and continue to be defining design elements in parts of New Orleans' French Quarter and historic Boston.

And while most lighting fixtures available today are produced in bulk, some skilled craftsmen continue to make copper gas lanterns by hand using the same techniques that have been used since colonial times. These time-tested methods ensure that the lanterns stand up to the elements and can provide patio and landscape lighting for decades to come.

At Flambeaux Lighting, our customers will find a full range of copper lanterns that can be used for patio lighting as well as indoor lighting. If you don't find the style you're looking for in our online catalog, email us or call us at 866-799-8443 and we can work with you to craft what you have in mind.

Entrance ways to patios are defined by doors. Choosing the right patio door can accentuate both your home and enhance the look of your patio. Patio doors come in various types to suit the style of your home and one of many great innovative types of patio doors comes in a modern material called unplasticized polyvinylchloride, or UPVC.

UPVC doors boasts of its durability and its maintenance free attribute. Not only that, it is decorative and attractive since it comes in different colors and faux finishes. They are available in any style or color of your choice. Some are made to look like natural wood and are pretty much indistinguishable until you come up close and touch it. This lends it to blend well in any existing décor you have going for your home.

Generally, UPVC is used for gutters, windows and door frames. Thus, you are assured of its strength to withstand wear and tear. You need not fuss much to keep it clean, as you only need to wipe it down with a damp cloth every now and then and it keeps itself looking spanking brand new.

How Much Does it Cost to Replace Windows in a House?

When one of my members asked me this question - how much does it cost to replace windows in a house? I told him this is such a broad question it would take me to consider a few issues instead of just providing a one word answer. Below I will provide a very broad but helpful view of this subject - hopefully you will find information that will be helpful to you.

o There are some companies that will give you a quote of about 00. I know Sears quoted one of my subscribers about that much.

o You can get one replacement window installed in your house for about 0. You can then multiply from there to total the number of windows in your home. This charge applies to windows that are double pane and you can get some from Andersons.

o The last time I checked ComfortWorld 4000 replacement windows will cost you about 0 to install any size.

o I know that Xact quotes about 00 for about 12 average siz double hung windows. Xact also gave another member a quote of 00 for 7 DH windows.

o Estimated prices for wood windows costs between 000 and 19000 and vinyl will cost you between 00 and 00. Of course this varies per number of windows needed.

o It is not unusual to be quoted about 0 per window. I know that some think this price is rather too high.

So I hope I have answered your question on how much does it cost to replace windows in a home. Of course you still need to get your own custom made quote before you start budgeting.
