Putting Window Blinds on French Doors and Patios

When you think of blinds you usually think of vinyl window blinds that lay horizontally. The slats open horizontally. There is nothing wrong with blinds that are made of vinyl. They are available in many colors nowadays and are easy to care for. If you wipe them down weekly with a clean cloth you will see how easy it is to keep them clean. Vinyl is not that durable however. If you want window blinds for French doors or patios, you may want to consider wood or bamboo.

French doors are doors after all and will be opened and closed often. You can buy wood or bamboo window blinds that really set your French doors apart and will stand up to the constant opening and closing of the doors. Window blinds made of wood will come in many colors and wood grains so you will have a great choice. Make sure you get a blind that will fasten to the bottom of the door to prevent the blinds for slamming against the door.

FRENCH DOORS

Patios are a little harder with wood. Wood blinds don't always hold up to the moisture that you get on a patio. Bamboo on the other hand will stand up to moisture, heat and cold. Window blinds that are made up of bamboo are inexpensive and durable. They will filter the sunlight when you need them to or let the sun in whenever you want. The way the light shines through the bamboo makes them a beautiful choice.

When looking for blinds for French doors and patios you should consider going with something more durable than vinyl. There are choices for you and that includes color. You can get bamboo and wood in many colors that will accent your rooms or patio. There is a very good chance you will like bamboo or wood more than vinyl. For the little extra you pay now, you will save later.

Whatever decision you make, you will need to be sure that you are 100% committed to it. This is because your patio or french doors are a center point of your room, and if you're not completely happy with your choice you will live to rue your poor choice. Be sure to visit a showroom that displays blinds for french doors or patio doors, or if you can; try and get a few free samples so you can see what the blinds look like.

How to Maximize Noise Reduction With Window Blinds

Do you have noisy neighbors? Then you need to consider noise reduction window blinds. It is true that certain blinds can reduce the noise level in your home. You do not need to hear the train passing, the party next door or even cars passing by. Read on to find out how noise reduction shades can help block unwanted noise.

Picking the Best Sound Absorbing Window Shades

LOWES FRENCH DOORS

When it comes to blocking out sound, you want a window treatment that can absorb sound. There are two highly recommended types to choose from to maximize noise reduction.

Cellular Blinds for Noise Reduction and Blocking Out Light

For those rooms that need to filter light and noise, you cannot go wrong with cellular shades. Whether you buy the single or double cell blinds, you will block out the noise with the unique honeycomb design.

These blinds are perfect for creating a home theater. They are also great for creating the perfect sleep atmosphere. Anyone who needs to sleep during the day will be wise to choose cellular shades.

Fusion Shades Block out Noise and Keep up Style

Anyone who loves the look of Roman shades but wants noise reduction as well will buy wisely by choosing fusion shades. They are two windows treatments in one product. It combines traditional Roman Shades and a honeycomb liner. The result is the Roman style blinds with cellular blind noise reduction.

In light of the recent recalls on Roman shades, the fusion shades offer the added benefit of a protective liner. The recall effects Roman style shades where the cord is exposed. The liner in the fusion shade hides the cord making it impossible for children to accidentally get caught in.

Important Installation Tips

For optimal sound reduction, you will want to get the perfect fit. If the blinds are not the proper size then the noise reduction is not nearly as good. Therefore, it is important to follow some guidelines in measuring and installation.

Measuring - Check with the manufacturer to see how they recommend measuring. In most cases, the recommendation is to measure the height and width in three different places.

Installation - Before starting your install, check that you have all the parts and tools available. Then follow the instructions for that blind. Not all blinds are installed in the exact same way and missing a step can affect the quality of the noise reduction. Finally, use a level. Too many people try to eyeball the installation and come up with blinds that are nothing but an eyesore.

Box Store Replacement Windows - Are You Getting the Best Replacement Window Available?

Lowe's or Home Depot make replacement windows very easy. They provide a turn key service to provide you the windows, offer you the support in getting them ordered and even provide an installation option to install them. By creating a "one stop shop" the large stores can cover it all. However, how do you know if you are getting the best window replacement project that you can from the large box stores? The information below details three areas you should consider when choosing a box store to supply your replacement windows.

Window Quality

LOWES FRENCH DOORS

Both Lowe's and Home Depot have several options to choose from when selecting replacement windows. To begin, each store carries their unique brand of window that is only found in their store. Lowe's carries the Reliabilt vinyl line and Home Depot carries American Craftsman vinyl windows. Both window lines are unique to each company meaning you will not be able to find the window brands outside of their respective stores. If you are worried about the quality of the "house" brand of windows, you should know that in a 2007 Consumer Reports test, the Reliabilt scored highest of the vinyl windows tested and the American Craftsman scored third.

In addition to their store brand windows, Lowe's replacement windows offering also includes the Pella brand. Pella has been in the window and door business for over 75 years and has a reputation for delivering quality products. Pella's service support after the sale insures that if you have problems with your window, it will be resolved. Home Depot carries the Andersen and Jeld Wen brands. These are large window manufacturers that have years of research behind their product. Like Pella, purchasing Andersen or Jeld Wen windows insures you are getting the support from the manufacturer after the purchase from the box store.

Window quality should not be considered a major concern when purchasing from the box stores. With house brands ranking at the top of Consumer Reports, and other brand name window companies available, you will be able to find a product that meets your level of quality.

Experienced Personnel

Purchasing and ordering windows is by no means brain surgery. However, there are many different factors involved with ordering replacement windows and it requires someone familiar with the process to insure the order is correct. The challenge homeowners face with stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot is getting consistency in the experience of employees. While each store has personnel that are dedicated and trained to specific departments of the store, it is not always easy to determine how much experience that person has with the product they are selling. An employee in millwork (windows) today could have been in electrical three weeks ago.

This is not to say that whomever you purchase replacement windows from at either store does not know what they are talking about. Both stores hire strong personnel, train well, and are very willing to help customers. Even so, you should always make sure the person helping you with your replacement windows is the most qualified person at the store. This will insure the details are covered and your order is correct.

Quality of Installation

One of the attractive aspects of the large home improvement stores is that they provide installation services along with the replacement windows. The "one stop shop" aspect makes it easy for homeowners to not have to search for a contractor to install their windows. In addition, the large stores offer installation pricing that is relatively inexpensive to fit most project budgets.

Before you commit to having the store's installers perform the work you should always research other installers to perform the work. Find out what the average installation costs are for your area. Chances are when you compare the installation prices to the Lowe's or Home Depot prices, you will find that the box store price is significantly cheaper than a professional installation company or an installer.

Before you think you are getting the steal of the century keep this in mind: The process to remove and replace a window is basically the same whether you do pay 0 or 0 an opening to get it done. If the work is getting done for 0, in order for the installer to make the same amount of profit as the 0 installer, they either have to cut material costs or reduce labor costs. If material costs are cut, you might not get the best caulk or the highest quality trim around the windows. This can lead to rotting wood and leaking windows.

Likewise, for contractors charging 0 to install a window, they have to install twice the number of windows to make the money the 0 per window installer does. This means they would have to spend half the time installing one window. If the basic process is the same, how good is the installation if they are taking half the time to complete it? The large stores use volume to offset their low installation price and in order to achieve volume they must install as many windows as they can in as short a time as possible. Keep this in mind when considering the quality of the installation that you will receive for the price point that the large box stores offer.

(The above statements are not meant to disparage the box store installers. They are good hardworking people like you or me and put effort into the work they do. Just be aware of how the system operates before beginning a project with a box store so you are not surprised at the results if they are less than desirable.)

How to Measure Your Windows For Window Blinds

A savvy shopper looking to find the best price on window blinds would be wise to do a little research. Stores like Walmart and Target will usually have competitive prices, but a limited selection of blinds from which to choose. The biggest advantage of walking into a discount store to buy your blinds off the shelf is that there is no waiting to get them. Just pay for them, take them home and put them up.

For those who are not limited by an immediate need to have something covering their windows, there are some rewards to shopping online. There are many internet retailers who have a wide selection of window treatments available that can be purchased "as is", "cut to order" or custom made. You can also price shop while at home in your skivvies enjoying a glass of wine or a beer. That's much better than driving around town to Target, Walmart, Home Depot or Lowes, plus you'll probably be able to save money as well as gas. Internet shopping is "green" shopping.

LOWES FRENCH DOORS

If you're going to order blinds online, knowing how to measure your windows or doors is important. Carpenter's have a saying "measure twice, cut once". In this situation you could say "Measure twice, pay once". If you order custom blinds and don't order the right size, you can't send them back, so if you want to reorder you'll be charged again.

If you're measuring for vertical blinds, here are a few tips so that you get the measurements right:

When you're writing down the measurements make sure to clearly note which number is the width and which is the height and always indicate the widthbefore the height (W x H). Plastic or cloth measuring tapes that are typically used by seamstresses for measuring cloth, or in my case, thighs, have a tendency to stretch, so use a steel measuring tape and measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. Measure the width in at least two places and take the smallest width. Depending on the width of the window, measure the height in at least two places and take the smallest height. If you're measuring for a sliding glass door, they usually only use a one-way draw. The tracks for one-way draws are usually reversible. Inside mount valances will not align flush with the wall. They will extend into the room an inch or two.

Should you choose and inside or an outside mount?

Make your decision on whether you will have an inside mount or an outside mount before measuring for the blinds. An outside mount can help conceal an old, unsightly window. An outside mount can make your windows appear larger. An inside mount provides a neater look. If you prefer an inside mount, make sure the window has enough depth to install the mounting hardware. For an inside mount, be sure to allow for the height of the blinds headrail in your measurements.

How to measure for an inside mount - Measure the width at the top, center and bottom of the window opening and record the narrowest width. Measure the height left, center and right and record the shortest height. Provide exact measurement when ordering your blinds because they will deduct 1/16 to 3/8 of an inch from the width and up to 1/2 inch from the height to make sure the blinds fit inside the window frame. Also, make sure the window has enough depth for the mounting brackets.

How to measure for an outside mount - Measure the width of the window opening and if there is room, add at least 4 inches to each side to try to minimize any leaks of outside light. Next, measure the height of the window opening and add at least 2 ½ inches to the height so that you can mount the brackets above the opening and allow for some overlap at the bottom of the window. If the blinds will hang down to the floor, make sure that you have about ½ inch clearance so that they open and close properly. When you specify an outside mount, no deductions will be taken and the blinds will be cut to the exact measurements you provide.

Now that you know the advantages to buying vertical blinds online (better selection, lower price and less hassle) and how to get the proper measurements, you can pour yourself a beer or a glass of wine, sit down at your computer and start surfing for the best blinds at the best prices. Oh! One additional bit of advice is to measure first and drink later.

Blinds and Shades Make Excellent French Door Window Coverings

French doors are elegant and graceful when used in any home; however, they come with their own special set of challenges when it comes to finding the perfect window treatments. Since the windows in French doors aren't stationary like regular windows are, you have to find blinds or shades that will move freely when the doors are opened and shut but which will also remain in place on the doors. Fortunately, manufacturers have answered your needs by producing a variety of lovely French door window coverings.

french doors prices

Have you ever been somewhere where there have been French doors with window coverings that weren't attached at the bottom of the windows? That annoying problem is the result of people trying to use regular shades or blinds to solve their door needs. French door coverings need to be attached at both the top and bottom of the window in order to be used as a window treatment without moving every time the door does. By purchasing specially-designed coverings that have rails at both the top and bottom, you can get rid of the problem permanently.

FRENCH DOORS

Solid wood blinds, in either a 1" or 2" width, are lovely choices for wood french doors. Many blinds are pre-stained, and if you're lucky enough to find some that are an exact match, it will be a simple job to purchase them in the size you need and hang them. However, for perfect matches of wood grain and color, you will usually need to buy unfinished blinds and stain them to get the look you want. Of course, blinds don't have to be stained. They can also be painted to match or contrast with a room. If you live in a damp climate, you might want to consider faux wood blinds instead of hardwoods, because although faux wood looks the same, it won't warp like wood will.

All different kinds of shades are popular choices for French door window coverings and can give your room a much softer look. Depending on the amount of privacy you want and the quantity of light you would like to let in, you can get shades that are either opaques or sheers. Basically any style of shade you can find can also be made to fit a French door. The difference will be that on doors, the shades are mounted outside of the glass frame, so you may have to use extension brackets or spacer blocks to get the clearance you need.

All About the Window Blind For Windows and French Doors

Window blinds are a type of window covering typically placed on the windows interior side. They are normally used to hide the interior part of the house and to limit the ray of sunlight. Currently, there are different kinds of window blinds sold in the market. Most of them are covered in this article.

french doors with screens

The first kind of blind is the Venetian blind. These blinds are categorized as large. The original Venetian blinds were made out of wide curved metal slats, which are similar to mini slats. It has curved, flat or elliptical shape.

FRENCH DOORS

Another type of window blind is the Faux or PVC. These kinds of blinds are categorized as mini blinds and are prepared using a solid or foamed poly vinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. Faux or PVC is one of the latest materials used for blind slats. The surface of the slat can either be smooth or embossed with wood grains. Typically, these kinds have limited color selection, which is mostly white. However, there are some that are made of wood tone colors.

PVC is very sturdy. It is generally resistant to UV rays and is water proof. More so, PVC materials are easy to clean. However, the disadvantage of faux blinds is the slat's weight. PVC slats are much heavier compared with both wood and composite slats. Thus, when they are used to large windows, the windows are more difficult to rise.

Composite blinds are another type of window blinds. They are made from a blend of wood materials and polymers. Composite is one of the newest window coverings. And it is considered as one of the best blinds. The surface on slat with composite material is either smooth poly coating or solid composite. Composite are very similar to PVC in terms of color selection and qualities. Its color selection is also limited, which are normally white. Currently, there are few composite blinds made of wood tone colors or stain colors. The price of composite blinds ranges from low to mid.

The last type of window blinds is the wood blind. Value and premium wood blinds are made out of real wood. The slats of the value wood blinds came from an assorted Oriental hardwood while the slats of the premium wood blinds came from American hardwood, typically the Basswood.

Wood blinds are generally great for matching a cabinet or trim stain with your window covering. These window blinds are among the best. However, they are also the most expensive window blinds. All slats made of wood can deform and may lose color over a period of time. Unlike PVC, wood blinds are light. In fact, they are the lightest window blinds. Hence, they work efficiently on larger windows.

Window blinds are used to add style and security inside your home. They have benefited many people since they were first launched, and they don't cost that much. With different choices, you are guaranteed to find the best blinds according to your home and your needs.

French and Patio Door Window Treatments

The majority of homes have some form of glass door leading to the backyard, outside patio area, deck, or balcony. These patio doors generally fall into three categories: French doors, sliding doors and single doors with panes of glass. For each type there are certain window treatments that work the best in terms of style and function. It can be very difficult to find the right door window treatment that matches the décor of your home and provides the appropriate operating features to meet the needs of your room. This article will offer some very helpful information on which door window treatments are available and which ones should be used depending on the type of glass, patio door.

french doors with screens

French doors, which consist of two glass doors opening in the middle, are very tricky to decorate. The problem with finding window treatments for French doors is the positioning of the handles, which makes them stick out. To overcome this problem of protruding decorative handles choose a window treatment that will hang flush against the door. Some possible window treatments that will fit snug against French doors are roller shades with standard roll option and one inch wood blinds. Both of these window coverings are not too deep and therefore will not interfere with the use of the handles. Another concern with decorating French doors is how often you will be adjusting the blinds or shades. If you will be opening the French door blinds or shades frequently you will want something that is easy to use and if you will be leaving them closed you can add brackets to hold the bottom closed.

FRENCH DOORS

Sliding glass doors generally slide from one side of the door frame to the other. If your patio door slides side to side, you'll want a window treatment that mirrors this side to side operation. Since there is a wide variety of sliding glass door window treatments that operate this way, it's simple to cater to your existing home decor. For example, many fabrics choices for panel track blinds are also available as roller shades or roman shades. Also, keep in mind how you want the patio door blinds or shades to stack when they are open. They can stack on either side or both if the sliding glass door window treatment opens down the middle. If you want the stack of vanes or slats to be fully off the window when gathered, you will need to add extra width so they will leave an unobstructed view. This is very important for the aesthetic of your window.

Single doors with glass panels are also decorated with window treatments. The main factor with this kind of patio door is the size of the internal window. If it spans the entire door then you should use either a vertical door blind or shade. These panes of glass leave your home vulnerable to the outside weather. To insulate this glass you will need to use cellular shades otherwise known as honeycomb shades. For smaller windows you may only need a horizontal mini blind or a small faux wood blind.

Overall, blinds and shades are hard to pair with patio doors and hopefully this article provides useful information for those in the buying process. Always remember to keep in mind both style and function when choosing your door blinds.

French and Patio Door Window Treatments

Whether your patio doors are French doors, sliding doors, or single doors with glass panels, there are a variety of door window treatments including door blinds and door shades that will look and function beautifully.

French Door Window Blinds - The Right Blinds For Your French Door Windows

If you want to put blinds on the windows of your french doors, you need to choose the different types of blinds that will go well with their location. So where do you put your window blinds? There are proper blinds for a proper place inside your house. Let us take this example on an airy and well-ventilated room. Blinds are made from different sheets strung together by a thread or string. These blinds also come in different materials which often makes noise when beaten against another of their kind. This makes it easy for you to notice whether there is a breeze coming though your French door window. If this is the case, then you are likely not to get a peaceful environment due to the cluttering noise made by the sheets.

french doors exterior

To remedy this, you need to select a horizontal blind for that window. These blinds are tightly entwined so that they do not make a noise unlike the vertical ones which are loosely strung. You need to make sure to make the right selection on the material of the blind. For this window, choose the heavier ones to eliminate the excessive movement due to the air or breeze. This prevents too much noise from the blind.

FRENCH DOORS

You also need to consider the quality and temperature of the room air. Some blinds can contribute to maintenance problems due to the fluctuations of temperature and moisture of the room. This is true for the Matchstick blinds which are made from bamboo or other raw materials such as rattan and other light woods. These natural materials are prone to temperature and moisture variations such these materials are prone to molds especially during rain. Avoid putting these blinds on areas where there is high moisture content such as in the bathroom and kitchens. However, you can still treat the material with a solution of salt and bicarbonate soda solution in water. This is an effective way to deter mold from growing onto these blinds.

The last thing to consider is the safety features of the blind. Although blinds are perfectly safe, any freak accident can still happen. It is very important to check the blinds well especially if you have children at home. Make sure to chose a blind that is made of good quality and select a which doesn't chip with its paint which can fall down on the floor. These are little things but these things might aggravate the situation especially if kids put these things inside their mouths, Better safe than sorry. Moreover, it is important to keep the chords of the blind in a length that is out of reach of children. This is a good way to ensure safety inside the home.

This is mostly what will likely to occur if you choose the inappropriate kind of blinds for your French door window blinds. These windows are an insight into your home just like the eyes are windows to your mind.

French Door Window Treatments - Getting the Best Curtains For Your French Doors

There are many French door window treatments available today and this is why it's not an easy task going out there and buying the best for your French doors. There are also many considerations that you need to take note off before spending your hard earned money on a new set of window treatments that might or might not suits your own French doors very well.

french doors interior

For example you might want to check how much light you want the curtains to let in the house. Also what type of room decor you have, will the style you buy fit in nicely with the rest of the furniture? And let's not forget about the fact that you need to spend money on it. How much money are you willing to spend on your new drapes? All these should not be overlooked when buying your new window treatments for home.

FRENCH DOORS

One of the best types I can personally recommend are the Honeycomb ones. They are very common and popular among many homeowners. The fact that they are available in many styles is a big plus. Very durable in quality, they have also a softness to them that people love. The reason for their interesting name is the fact that they have layers of air pockets made in the form of a honeycomb. This allows the temperature to be regulated at all times, enhancing the room insulation. Of course the more honeycombs you have on your drapes, the better the insulation.

You can find the Honeycomb drapes in either single, double or triple style. The single one doesn't provide as much insulation as the double, which provides less than the triple. Also if you get curtains with larger pleats you are better off than going for smaller ones. A popular version seems to be the one with 3/8 inches double cell shades that have a really reasonable price tag attached to them. So as you can see, proper insulation is a major consideration when buying your new French or patio door window treatments, such as the patio door curtains.

You can easily find drapes with strong light filtering if you have rooms in the house such as a media room or others that need to be dark for longer periods of time. Also some added features of these curtains are them being motorized and the availability of the top-down versions, as opposed to bottom-up, which are the most common ones on the market today.

Finally let's not forget about Roman blinds, which are very popular as well for French doors. These are a very powerful alternative if room decor is a strong point in getting French door window treatments. They are available at a really good price nowadays.

One solution to prevent obstructing the doorway is to place the curtains well above the frame and to have the curtain rod clear of the frame on each side so that the curtains won't get caught in the door. Alternatively you could have curtains or blinds installed on the actual door, so there's no concern about fabric being caught in between the doors.

If you going to use curtains, you'll want them to be floor length, or you could have them a little longer and have them puddle at the base. You could have them hanging down loosely or have them with tie-backs to each side. The curtains could be finished off with a valance; either scalloped across the top of the curtains or sitting straight a few inches down the curtain for a more formal look.

A pair of Roman magic blinds attached to each door also looks very effective. You could have these on the doors by themselves or you could accentuate them with some side curtains. If you went for this look, the blinds could be in a plain color and the side curtains in a contrasting or complimentary color or pattern.

You could also get some mini blinds that could be fitted on each door, and have those either on their own or complimented with curtains. Another window treatment for French doors is to have one large curtain that covers ¾ of the doors, and then having it tie back so it leaves one of the doors free for easy access.

Variations of French door window treatments:

Horizontal mini blinds

You can choose wooden, aluminum, or vinyl mini blinds. It depends on your budget, taste and on your entire room appearance. With wood blinds you will get a classic informal look in the room, while aluminum blinds better match modern interiors. Vinyl mini blinds are a very practical choice, especially for high humidity areas, like bathroom or kitchen, but they may look not very attractive in such living spaces as living/dining room, patio, or a bedroom with a balcony, especially if you want your interior to look stylish.

If you decided about this kind of French door window treatments, keep in mind, that horizontal blinds need enough space when they are completely opened. Look for an appropriate slat size. Wooden mini blinds usually come in 1" slat size, while vinyl and aluminum mini blinds can be 1/2" or 1". Some manufacturers provide special shapes for their blinds. You may consider so called "cut-outs" option, if you order custom made window blinds and need space for door knobs.

Fabric French door window treatments

Draperies - most traditional type of window treatments for French doors. There are endless of variations. With a wide range of fabrics and drapery styles, you can not only make your French doors more stylish, but also give a finished look to the entire room. If the space of the room allows - hang your draperies wide and high enough above the doors. It provides an additional elegance to the room and makes a door movement easier. Sheers - you can hang them on your French doors using drapery rods on the top and the bottom of the doors. However, many people don't like sheers because of their outdated look. You may consider screen shades or solar roller shades instead, which still provide outside view, protect furniture from sun rays and also reduce glare. You can install these shades in addition to draperies, or without them.
Window Shades

Fabric roman shades - look nice for many interior styles - contemporary, country, classic, and so on. The level of privacy and light blockage depends on the type of fabric you select for your shades. As for your roman shades styles, you can choose one that you like the best and that match best your room interior. Bamboo roman shades or bamboo roller shades go well with several interior styles - modern, orient, exotic, even classic. Depending on their texture, these shades may gently diffuse light, or block it completely.

If you choose blinds or shades for your French doors, consider to get something that holds them on the bottom and prevents from flopping when you open and close the door. For horizontal blinds you can install hold-down braclets, and for roman shades some people use Velcro. You may also find your own solution.
